Oil Pressure Gauge - Elevated Reading, Pegged at 80 PSI
Group Ref.: 6 - EngineBulletin No.: 476114
Date: June, 1994
SUBJECT:
ELEVATED OIL PRESSURE GAUGE READING DUE TO POOR GROUND FOR [1][2]OIL PRESSURE SENSOR (REPLACE OIL FILTER ADAPTER BOLT)
MODELS:
1993 CHEVROLET CAMARO
1993 PONTIAC FIREBIRD
WITH 3.4L PUSHROD V6 ENGINE (VIN S - RPO L32)
CONDITION:
Some owners may comment on an elevated oil pressure gauge reading. Typically, the gauge reading is pegged at 80 psi.
CAUSE:
The [1][2]oil pressure sensor sends an electrical signal to the oil pressure gauge. The oil pressure sensor is located in the oil filter adapter and relies on the oil filter adapter bolt to provide a ground path to the engine block. Due to the coating used on the oil filter adapter bolt, ground integrity may not always be maintained.
CORRECTION:
Follow the diagnostics as outlined in Section 8A of the service manual. Remember, loss of the mechanical ground for the [1][2]oil pressure sensor will cause the oil pressure gauge to read high. Replace the oil filter adapter bolt with a new bolt, part number 12537215, oil filter adapter bolt seal, part number 14033233, and the oil filter adapter gasket, part number 12337894. Following the service procedure outlined in the service manual, torque the adapter bolt to 68 N-m (50 lbs.ft.). Be sure to inspect for oil leaks after the repair is complete.
