Audio - Poor Radio Reception

Group Ref.: Accessories

Bulletin No.: 339601

Date: December, 1993

SUBJECT:
RADIO RECEPTION CONDITIONS
(REPLACE ANTENNA BRACKET ASSEMBLY)

MODELS:
1993-94 CHEVROLET CAMARO
1993-94 PONTIAC FIREBIRD MAST RADIO ANTENNA (NON-POWER)

CONDITION:

Some owners may comment that the radio reception may be less than expected under some conditions. On AM, there may be a higher than normal level of static. On FM, the range of station reception may be less than normal. This condition usually gets worse with time, particularly if the car is taken through a mechanical carwash frequently.

CAUSE:

The antenna bracket assembly on the mast (nonpower) antenna may have insufficient staking internally, causing a poor ground condition. This poor ground will cause the above conditions. Mechanical carwashes will aggravate the condition.

In addition, the torque on the fender attaching nut may be low, which also leads to a poor ground condition.

The staking process was changed early in the 1994 model year, and these parts were used in production after VIN's R2112106 (Chevrolet) and R2204885 (Pontiac).

CORRECTION:

Replace the antenna bracket assembly with a new one. Use P/N 10257131 for Chevrolet and P/N 10257133 for Pontiac.

Follow the directions in Section 9A of the Service Manuals. The fender attaching nut should be torqued to 4 N-m (35 lb.in.).
