Cruise Control - System Inoperative

Subject:
CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM INOPERATIVE
(INSTALL NEW CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE SWITCH)

Models Affected:
1993 FIREBIRD MODELS

CONDITION:

Customers may comment the 1993 model year Firebird cruise control system is inoperative. The condition may be intermittent.

CAUSE:

Driver may not sufficiently depress the brake pedal.

The cruise control system must detect an actuation of the cruise control release switch on key up before the cruise control system will operate. That switch is actuated by the brake pedal.

The driver may depress the brake pedal enough to release the "brake transmission shift interlock" (BTSI) function, but this may not be enough to actuate the cruise control release switch. If that happens, cruise control will not operate until it senses the release switch is working.

CORRECTION:

Verify both the stop lamp switch and the cruise control release switch are properly adjusted as described in Section 5 of the applicable service manual.

Advise the driver the brake pedal must be fully depressed when shifting out of "Park" to actuate both switches for the cruise control system to be operative.

A revised cruise control release is available. This revised switch will require less brake pedal travel to actuate, and will ease driver effort required to enable the cruise function.
