Subject:
EXHAUST SYSTEM RATTLE (REPLACE PIPE ASSEMBLY AND EXHAUST SEAL)

Models Affected:
1993 FIREBIRD MODELS WITH 3.4L ENGINE (RPO L32)

CONDITION:

Some 1993 Firebird models with 3.4L V-6 engines (RPO L32) and assembled prior to VIN breakpoints indicated below, may exhibit a tinny rattle type noise audible during engine warm-up between 1100 to 1400 RPM when under a moderate load. This condition can be duplicated with the vehicle in drive, service and parking brake applied and by running engine up between 1100-1400 RPM.

VIN #'s: P2204574

CAUSE:

The exhaust crossover/takedown pipe assembly is manufactured with an inner and outer pipe with an intended gap of approximately 5-6 mm between them. On assemblies where this gap has not been maintained, contact between the inner and outer pipes may occur during certain operating conditions resulting in a tinny rattle type noise.

CORRECTION:

Replace existing exhaust crossover/takedown pipe assembly and seals with new components indicated below following applicable Service Manual procedures in section 6F, Exhaust System.
