LOOSE, RATTLING INSTRUMENT PANEL UPPER TRIM PANEL (REPLACE FASTENER)
MODELS:
1993-94 CHEVROLET CAMARO
1993-94 PONTIAC FIREBIRD
CONDITION:
Some owners may comment of loose and rattling Instrument Panel (I/P) upper trim panel.
CORRECTION:
Replace dual lock tape fasteners with dual lock riveted fasteners.
Procedure:
1. Remove windshield pillar garnish moldings on both left and right sides.
2. Remove I/P upper trim panel and place back side up on a clean work surface.
3. Remove dual lock tape fasteners from trim panel leading edge, check I/P carrier for fasteners which may have come loose from upper trim panel and remove if any.
IMPORTANT:
DO NOT remove dual lock fasteners which are bonded to the VP carrier.
4. Visually inspect sound deadener pad on I/P carrier to be sure it is properly positioned and that cut outs for dual lock fasteners are aligned correctly and are large enough. Reposition and/or enlarge cut outs as required.
CHEVROLET CAMARO ONLY (See Figure 1)
A. Drill a 1/8" (3 mm) hole in the center of each of the stand off locations on the leading edge of the trim pad where dual lock tape fasteners were attached.
NOTICE:
Use of a drill stop or other device Is recommended to prevent drilling through the VP trim panel.
B. Attach large round dual lock fasteners, P/N 10256907, from Kit, P/N 10264251, to trim panel using pop rivets, P/N 16754192, at locations indicated in Figure 1.
C. At Location # 5 (See Figure 1), DO NOT use the round rivet retained fastener. Use dual lock tape supplied in Idt, cut tape to fit area at Location #5. Pierce a small hole through the center of the tape and insert a drive rivet, P/N 16754493, through the tape. Remove tape backing and install. Using a small punch and hammer push drive rivet into grid at location # 5.
PONTIAC FIREBIRD ONLY (See Figure 2)
Attach a large dual lock fastener at each grid location (See # 4 Figure 2) using a drive rivet, P/N 16754493. Use a small punch and a hammer to push drive rivet into grid stand off. Note location of rivet to grid stand off is not always in the center (See Figure 2).
NOTE:
Some Pontiac Firebirds may not have a grid stand off as Illustrated at Location #6 in Figure 2. These vehicles may use a dual lock tape or nothing at this location.
If dual lock tape was used in this location and needs replacing, use a piece from Kit P/N 10264251.
If no fastener was used in this location do not install one.
5. Reinstall sound deadener pad, making sure cutouts are aligned with dual lock fasteners on the carrier.
6. Reinstall I/P upper trim panel engaging all dual lock fasteners.
7. Reinstall windshield garnish moldings.
