Removal and Replacement
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.2. Remove air cleaner assembly and disconnect TV cable at upper end.
3. Remove fluid level indicator and oil dipstick tube.
4. Raise and support vehicle. Do not use a twin post type hoist.
5. Support rear axle with an adjustable jackstand.
6. Remove track bar mounting bolt at axle assembly, then loosen track bar bolt at body brace.
7. Remove rear brake hose clip at underbody to allow for additional axle drop.
8. Remove lower mounting bolts from right and left side shock absorbers.
9. Carefully lower rear axle and remove coil springs.
10. Remove torque arm to rear axle attaching bolts.
11. Remove torque arm clamp from transmission, then the torque arm from the vehicle.
12. Remove propeller shaft, then disconnect shift linkage at the transmission.
13. Disconnect any electrical leads at transmission, then remove any clips that hold leads to transmission case.
14. Remove flywheel cover, then mark relationship between flywheel and converter for installation reference.
15. Remove torque converter attaching bolts.
16. Remove catalytic converter support bracket, then the transmission mount to support attaching nut.
17. Remove transmission support to frame bolts, then any insulators, if used.
18. Using a transmission jack, support and raise transmission slightly.
19. Slide transmission support rearward, then lower transmission to gain access to oil cooler pipes and TV cable attachments.
20. Disconnect oil cooler pipes from transmission, cap all openings.
21. Disconnect speedometer cable or pulse generator, then the TV cable from transmission.
22. Support engine assembly, then remove transmission to engine attaching bolts.
23. Install torque converter holding fixture tool No. J-21366 or equivalent, then carefully lower transmission from vehicle.
24. Reverse procedure to install.
