Wiper Motor: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Remove wiper arm and blade assemblies as follows:
a. Operate wipers at lowest delay setting, then shut Off wipers at inner wipe (end of sweep) position.
b. Mark windshield at tip of blade assembly to aid installation, then lift wiper arm nut cover and remove nut.
c. Remove wiper arm from linkage drive shaft using wiper arm puller J 39637.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove lefthand cowl panel and hood seal.
3. Disconnect washer hose assembly from lefthand cowl panel, then the electrical connector from wiper motor assembly.
4. Remove screw and nut from lefthand linkage assembly, Fig. 28, then disconnect socket of righthand linkage assembly from ball of lefthand linkage assembly using wiper linkage separator J39232.
5. Remove lefthand linkage assembly, then the screw from wiper motor assembly.
6. Pull wiper motor assembly free from slots of bracket, then disconnect socket of righthand linkage assembly from crank arm ball of wiper motor assembly using wiper linkage separator.

INSTALLATION

When installing wiper motor assembly, ensure that crank arm is in inner wipe position. Crank arm drive pin must be engaged in cam pocket.
1. Press socket of righthand linkage assembly into engagement with crank arm ball of wiper motor assembly using wiper linkage installer J 39529.
2. Install wiper motor assembly with two locator pads pressed fully into slots of bracket, then the mounting screw and torque to 7.5 ft. lbs.
3. Install lefthand linkage assembly without attaching parts, then press socket of righthand linkage assembly into engagement with ball of lefthand linkage assembly using wiper linkage installer.
4. Attach lefthand linkage assembly with screw and nut and torque to 7.5 ft. lbs.
5. Connect electrical connector to wiper motor assembly, then the washer hose assembly to lefthand cowl panel and washer nozzle.
6. Install lefthand cowl panel and hood seal, then connect battery ground cable.
7. Install wiper arm and blade assemblies as follows:
a. Install wiper arm and blade assembly onto linkage drive shaft, with tip of blade assembly aligned with mark made at removal.
b. Install nut on linkage drive shaft and torque to 24 ft. lbs. while holding wiper arm.
c. Close nut cover, then run wipers and check for proper wipe pattern. Shut Off wipers and check for correct park position.
