Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

FRONT

1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
2. Remove intake manifold, camshaft carrier and exhaust manifold as outlined under INTAKE MANIFOLD, CAMSHAFT CARRIER and EXHAUST MANIFOLD.
3. Remove right cooling fan assembly.
4. Remove oil level indicator tube.
5. Disconnect temperature sending unit connector.
6. Remove cylinder head bolts then the cylinder head.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install cylinder head gasket with metal tabs between cylinders facing up.
b. Torque cylinder head bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 4 to 37 ft. lbs. plus an additional 90° turn using torque/angle meter tool No. J-36660, or equivalent.

REAR

1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
2. Remove intake manifold, camshaft carrier and exhaust manifold as outlined under INTAKE MANIFOLD, CAMSHAFT CARRIER and EXHAUST MANIFOLD.
3. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector.
4. Remove rear timing belt tensioner bracket.
5. Remove cylinder head bolts then the cylinder head and gasket.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install cylinder head gasket with metal tabs between cylinders facing up.
b. Torque cylinder head bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 4 to 37 ft. lbs. plus an additional 90° using torque/angle meter tool No. J-36660, or equivalent.
