Section 6A9 - Revised Crankshaft Installation Procedure

Models:
1991-95 Chevrolet Lumina
1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
1991-95 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme
1991-95 Pontiac Grand Prix
with 3.4L Engine (VIN X - RPO LQ1)

The crankshaft installation procedure has been revised. Use the following procedure to properly install and seat the crankshaft. This procedure should be used along with the procedure found in the appropriate service manual.

Tool required: J 36660 Torque Angle Meter

Manual Transaxle

Install or Connect

1. Lubricate rod and main bearings with clean engine oil.

Notice:
Use care when installing crankshaft to avoid damaging journals, bearing inserts, or connecting rods.

2. Crankshaft.

3. Main bearing caps and studs/bolts.

Notice:
Failure to thrust crankshaft per procedure may cause premature bearing or crankshaft wear.

4. With crankshaft bearings and bearing caps installed and studs/ bolts started, thrust crankshaft forward to set and align bearing caps, then thrust crankshaft rearward to align front face of # 3 thrust main bearing.

Tighten

^ Main bearing studs/bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb.ft.) + 75° using J 36660.
^ Connecting rod cap nuts evenly to 20 Nm (15 lb.ft.) + 75° using J 36660.

5. Refer to Section 6A9 in applicable service manual for reassembly.

Automatic Transaxle

Install or Connect

1. Lubricate rod and main bearings with oil.

Notice:
Use care when installing crankshaft to avoid damaging journals, bearing inserts, or connecting rods.

2. Crankshaft.

3. Main bearing caps and studs/bolts.

Notice:
Failure to thrust crankshaft per procedure may cause premature bearing or crankshaft wear.

4. With crankshaft bearings and bearing caps installed and studs/bolts started, thrust crankshaft rearward to set and align bearing caps, then thrust crankshaft forward to align front face of # 3 thrust main bearing.

Tighten:

^ Main bearing studs/bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb.ft.) + 75° using J 36660.
^ Connecting rod cap nuts evenly to 20 Nm (15 lb.ft) + 75° using J 36660.

5. Refer to Section 6A9 in applicable service manual for reassembly.
