Group Ref.: EngineBulletin No.: 236007
Date: November, 1993
SUBJECT:
OCCASIONAL ENGINE STALL
(VERIFY CRANKSHAFT END PLAY)
MODELS:
1991-93 CHEVROLET LUMINA
1991-93 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX
1991-92 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME
(WITH 3.4L ENGINE (RPO L01) AND MANUAL TRANSMISSION)
CONDITION:
Some owners may experience an occasional engine stall, usually on deceleration with clutch disengaged. Stall may also occur on a turn or at slow speeds forward or reverse (parking lot maneuver).
CAUSE:
Excessive end play of crankshaft due to wear of the crankshaft thrust bearing.
CORRECTION:
If normal diagnosis does not correct the condition, check for excessive crankshaft endplay, using the following procedure:
1. Prep vehicle.
2. Raise vehicle on the hoist.
3. Remove right front tire and wheel.
4. Remove right inner fender splash shield.
5. Mount dial indicator to coolant crossover pipe with probe on crankshaft pulley bolt head and zero the indicator.
6. Move crankshaft fore and aft by placing (2) two long shaft screwdrivers between the flywheel and engine/transmission. Due care should be used so as not to damage any engine or transmission parts.
7. Maximum crankshaft travel should not exceed 0.008 inch.
8. Remove dial indicator.
9. Reinstall right inner fender splash shield.
10. Reinstall tire and wheel, torque lug nuts to 140 N-m (103 lbs.ft.)
11. Lower vehicle.
If the crankshaft end play exceeds the specified limit, indicating a worn thrust bearing, thorough inspection of the affected parts will determine what service repair should be performed.
