Instruments - Temperature Gauge Reads High

Group Ref.: Chassis/Body Electrical

Bulletin No.: 338311

Date: December, 1993

SUBJECT:
TEMPERATURE GAUGE READS HIGH, ENGINE DOES NOT OVERHEAT (REPLACE INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER)

MODELS:
1993 PONTIAC SUNBIRD

Condition:

Some vehicles built from March, 1993 to the end of production may exhibit a high gauge reading without an overheat condition.

Correction:

Instrument panel cluster calibrations have been changed and are available for service.

Verify the cooling system is functioning properly.

1. Check cooling system for proper fill and insure that there are no leaks.

2. Check coolant for proper glycol/water mix. It must be set at -34 degrees Fahrenheit, (-37 degrees Celsius), (50-50 mixture). Too much glycol reduces the heat transfer and will make the gage indicate hot. Coolant should be checked from the radiator drain cock (not the surge tank). An optical refractometer (J 23688 or J 38633) should be used. They are temperature compensated.

3. Check ECM coolant temperature with vehicle fully warmed up. Tech 1 should read 196 - 206 degrees Fahrenheit, (91 - 97 degrees Celsius), at normal driving conditions. At prolonged idle, ECM temperature will increase as total system heats up until coolant fans activate at 228 degees Fahrenheit (109 degrees Celsius).

4. Refer to Service Manual Section 8A for additional diagnosis information.

If all systems are functioning as described, check cluster identification and exchange with the specified cluster listed in the table from an authorized NC Delco center. Use applicable labor time and Service Manual procedure in Section 8C of the Service Manual.
