Disassemble

1. Remove external transaxle mounted linkage components, as follows:

a. Remove shift lever nut (137), washer (136) and lever (135).

b. Remove pivot pin retainer clip (129), pivot pin (130), then the pivot (133).

c. Remove pin (138) and shift shaft collar (134), then the bolts (132) and selector lever retainer (131).

d. Remove fluid level indicator assembly (97), then the electronic speed sensor (171).

2. Remove shift rail detent holder cover (173) by puncturing middle of cover and prying off with roll type pry bar.

3. Remove detent holder bolts (174), detent holder (168), springs (169) and interlock pins (167).

4. Remove detent balls (170) and reverse shift rail bushing (166).

5. Remove shift shaft detent cover snap ring (139) and cover (140).

6. Remove reverse/fifth bias screw (141), outer spring seat (142), spring (143) and inner spring seat (144). Reverse/fifth bias spring outer seat and screw are under pressure. Use caution when removing.

7. Place transaxle in neutral gear and position clutch housing upward.

8. Remove clutch housing bolts (83), then the clutch housing (25).

9. Separate transaxle case halves, then remove differential output shaft (115) as follows:

a. Insert screwdriver through differential case assembly (64).

b. Lightly tap output shaft (115) to free from case.

c. Remove differential output shaft (115).

10. Remove differential gear assembly (60) and chip collector magnet (201).

11. Remove inner shift shaft roll pin (154).

12. Remove inner shift shaft HD roll pin (158) as follows:

a. Shift transaxle into first gear, then drive HD roll pin (158) out halfway. Do not bottom pin on transaxle case.

b. Push shaft inward to provide clearance for pin removal, then remove pin (158) from shaft.

13. Install shift shaft assembly tool No. J-39366, or equivalent, through shift shaft opening while removing shift shaft.

14. Remove shift shaft components and shaft assembly tool.

15. Engage gear cluster in fourth (A) and reverse (B).

16. Remove gear cluster support component as follows:

a. Remove end cover bolts (91) and cover (90), then the bearing oil delivery tubes (226 and 227).

b. Remove spacer (90), then the input gear cluster retainer (89) using hex 10 socket or equivalent.

c. Remove reverse idler shaft bolt (92), then return transaxle to neutral position.

17. Return transaxle to neutral position.

18. Position disassembly pallet tool No. J-39367, or equivalent, on transaxle case/gear cluster assembly, noting the following:

a. Align shift rail and shaft pilots to fixture.

b. Turn assembly over so transaxle sits on pallet.

19. Remove reverse shift rail plug (202) using extractor tool No. J-36826 and slide hammer tool No. J-23907, or equivalents, then install bushing installer/adapter tool No. J-36029-2, or equivalent, into reverse shift rail bushing.

20. Remove case assembly (84) from gear cluster and shift rails, while pushing bushing tool into case to hold reverse shift rail detent ball (126) and spring (125) in position.

21. Note how shift forks interconnect, then remove shift forks and gear cluster from pallet.
