Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

TRANSAXLE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Tools Required:
^ J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
^ J 36226 Ball Joint Separator

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.





2. TV cable at throttle.
3. TV cable at transaxle.
4. Selector cable at transaxle lever.
5. Selector cable bracket at transaxle.
^ Leave cable attached at bracket.

6. Wiring connectors at:
^ VSS.
^ TCC.
^ PNP switch.

7. Vent hose at top of transaxle.
8. Starter retaining bolts, pull starter out of transaxle and support starter.
9. Speedometer drive cable.
10. Top three transaxle to engine bolts.





11. Install J 28467-A engine support fixture.
12. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
13. Both front wheels.
14. Splash shield.
15. Ball joint from left and right steering knuckles using J 36226.


NOTICE: When using J 36226 to separate the ball joint, be sure to disregard the "this side towards wheel" stamping on the tool. This tool, J 36226, is the "H" vehicle ball joint separator. When used with the "T" car, the tool must be rotated to the other position.

16. Left axle shaft from transaxle.
17. Right axle shaft from transaxle.





18. Cooler hoses (fluid will escape).
19. Converter cover (4 bolts).
20. Torque converter to flywheel bolts.

IMPORTANT
^ Using a scribe, mark the flywheel to torque converter relationship to assure proper reassembly.


Left Transaxle Mount:




21. Left transaxle/engine mount (5 bolts).
22. Support transaxle with jack.


Rear Transaxle Mount:




23. Rear transaxle/engine mount (3 bolts).


Right Transaxle Mount:




24. Right transaxle to engine mount (2 bolts).
25. Remaining engine to transaxle bolts.
26. Transaxle.

INSPECT
^ For inspection and overhaul procedures refer to Transaxle Disassembly/Assembly or Overhaul.

CLEAN
^ Transaxle oil cooler and lines should be flushed with J 35944 or equivalent whenever the transaxle has been removed for overhaul or replacement of the torque converter, pump or case. Follow the tool manufacturer's instructions for flushing the oil cooler and lines.




INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Apply a small amount of grease on the torque converter pilot hub.
^ Make sure to seat properly the torque converter in the oil pump.

2. Position transaxle in vehicle.
3. Lower transaxle retaining bolts.

Tighten
^ Lower bolts to 75 N.m (55 lbs. ft.).

4. Right transaxle to engine mount (2 bolts).

Tighten
^ Right mount bolts to 40 N.m (30 lbs. ft.).

5. Left and rear transaxle/engine mount bolts.

Tighten
^ Left and rear bolts to 22 N.m (16 lbs. ft.).

6. Converter to flywheel bolts.

Tighten
^ Converter bolts to 60 N.m (44 lbs. ft.).
7. Converter cover.
8. Both axle shafts.
^ Be sure axle shafts seat into transaxle.

9. Right and left ball joint at steering knuckle.
10. Splash shield.
11. Both wheels.
12. Lower vehicle.
13. Remove engine support fixture.
14. Remaining transaxle to engine retaining bolts.

Tighten
^ Bolts to 75 N.m (55 lbs. ft.).

15. Selector cable at transaxle lever, check adjustment.
16. Vent hose.
17. Starter assembly.
18. Speedometer drive cable.
19. TV cable at transaxle and throttle lever, check adjustment.
20. Wiring connectors:
^ VSS.
^ TCC.
^ PNP switch.

21. Negative battery cable.
22. Transaxle fluid.

INSPECT
^ TV cable adjustment.
^ Shift linkage adjustment.
^ For proper oil level.
^ For oil leaks.
