Exhaust Manifold - Squeak Noise During Heavy Load

Squeak, Squeal or Pop Noise During Garage Shifts and Acceleration (Replace the Exhaust Manifold Pipe Seal)

Models:
1994 Chevrolet Beretta/Corsica and Cavalier
1994 Pontiac Sunbird with 2.OL or 2.2L Engine (VINs H, 4 - RPOs LE4, LN2)

This bulletin is being revised to correct a part number in the "Service Information" section. Please discard bulletin 476601 (Group Reference 6 - Engine).

Condition

Some owners may comment about a squeak noise during heavy load (i.e., wide-open-throttle, going over bumps) while driving. The squeak may also occur when shifting into Drive or Reverse (when the engine moves on its mounts) while the vehicle is stopped.

Cause

The squeak noise is caused by the exhaust manifold pipe seal when the exhaust system moves.

Correction

Replace the exhaust manifold pipe seal with P/N 24570693. The new part has been changed to correct this condition.





Vehicles built after the following breakpoints have the updated exhaust seal on them:

Service Information

1. Raise vehicle and support (refer to SECTION 0A in the appropriate service manual).

2. Remove bolt and spring assemblies.

3. Remove old seal and clean seal surfaces.

4. Install new seal, P/N 24570693.

5. Install bolt and spring assemblies. Tighten to 35 N-m (26 lb.ft).

6. Lower vehicle.
