Differential
DISASSEMBLE1. Remove lefthand differential side bearing from case using puller tool No. J-22888, puller legs tool No. J-22888- 30 and pilot tool No. J-2241-11, or equivalents.
2. Remove ten bolts and differential ring gear from case.
3. Remove righthand differential side bearing from case using puller and pilot tools.
4. Use screwdriver to pry speedometer drive gear or vehicle speed sensor from differential case. Do not reuse speedometer drive gear.
5. Remove pinion roll pin and shaft, then the pinion gears and thrust washers and side gears and thrust washers.
ASSEMBLE
1. Apply oil to bearing inner and outer race surfaces, then install pinion gears and thrust washers and side gears and thrust washers.
2. Install pinion shaft, then secure with pinion shaft roll pin.
3. Measure differential side gear backlash using feeler gauge. Backlash should be 0.0012-0.0031 inch. If backlash is more than 0.0031 inch, select larger size thrust washers to bring side gear to specifications. If backlash is less than 0.0012 inch, select smaller size washers to bring side gear to specifications.
4. Heat new speedometer drive gear or vehicle speed sensor in oven to approximately 200° F, then install onto case. Do not use an acetylene torch or other open flame. Allow preheated parts to air cool after installation. Do not quench preheated parts with water. Used compressed air to aid cooling of preheated parts. Wear leather welding gloves to prevent burns or injury.
5. Install right differential side bearing onto differential case using bearing installer tool No. J-22919, or equivalent, and hydraulic press.
6. Heat differential ring gear in oven to approximately 212°F, then install onto case. Tighten bolts to specifications. Do not use an acetylene torch or other open flame. Allow preheated parts to air cool after installation. Do not quench preheated parts with water. Used compressed air to aid cooling of preheated parts. Wear leather welding gloves to prevent burns or injury.
7. Install lefthand side bearing onto case using bearing installer tool No. J-22919, or equivalent, and a press.
