This bulletin is being revised to update parts and warranty information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 67-71-40 (Section 7 - Transmission).
Condition
Some owners may comment that during cold ambient temperature conditions the ignition key may be difficult to remove when the transmission is placed in the park "P" position. This condition may be temporarily resolved when the shifter lever is wiggled several times.
Cause
The park lock cable assembly may bind due to shifter assembly geometry thereby not releasing the ignition key. In addition, the "brake transmission shift interlock" (BTSI) solenoid may bind due to interference between its wiring connector retaining strap and the ashtray and/or due to cold ambient temperature conditions.
For Pontiac vehicles only - The sliding tape closeout in the console trimplate assembly may also interfere with the BTSI solenoid causing it to bind.
Correction
Revised transmission control assemblies are available to address the binding conditions. These shifters have revised stampings. In addition, the "brake transmission shift interlock" (BTSI) solenoid rod has a revised coating to improve sliding characteristics.
Replace transmission control assembly per Section 7A of the applicable Service Manual. See parts information located at the end of this bulletin for applicable part numbers.
Important:
In order to prevent binding, Insure all excessive cable lengths are routed away from the shifter assembly and the wire harness which passes in front of the shifter assembly is not holding the cables up off the floor pan. Also remove section of orange retaining strap between the BTSI wiring harness and the retaining tab. IMPORTANT: DO NOT REMOVE RETAINING TAB FROM BTSI WIRING CONNECTOR.
For Pontiac only - The revised trimplates have additional material clearance from the closeout tape to eliminate the interference with the BTSI solenoid. Replace console trim plate assembly per Section 8C of the applicable Service Manual. See parts information located at the end of this bulletin for applicable part numbers.
