Rear Compartment Lid - Water Leaks On An Incline

File In Section: 10 - Body

Bulletin No.: 53-10-32

Date: December, 1995

Subject:
Water Leaks at Rear Compartment Lid When Parked on an Incline (Add Sealer to Weatherstrip Carrier)

Models:
1993-96 Chevrolet Camaro
1993-96 Pontiac Firebird

Condition

Some vehicles may exhibit water leaks at the rear compartment lid. This condition is most likely to occur when the vehicle is parked on an incline during a period of rain with the front end being lower than the rear of the vehicle.

Cause

This condition may be due to a collection of water in the rear compartment lid gutter. Water may collect in the gutter and find a path into the vehicle at the flange mounted weatherstrip.

Correction

This condition may be improved by adding sealer to the weatherstrip carrier as shown in Figure 1. Using 3M # 08302, Dominion American Sure Seal # LSC, Kent # 10500 (Canadian # 32135) or equivalent, add sealer to the weatherstrip carrier for approximately 253 mm (10 inches) in each direction from the lower corner of the weatherstrip and reinstall the weatherstrip to the mounting flange.

It is also a good time to check the flange for even surfaces or steps at joints and seal those areas as well.
