Date: December, 1995
Subject:
Steering Lead or Pull, Usually to the Right (Check Tire Pressure, Rotate Tires, Check Alignment)
Models:
1995-96 Chevrolet Camaro
1995-96 Pontiac Firebird
Condition
Some of the above listed vehicles may develop a steering lead or pull. This will usually be to the right, but on occasion may be to the left.
Cause
Tire forces may change during the first several thousand miles of driving, creating a lead or pull. As with most other vehicles, excessive cross camber or cross caster (left minus right) can also cause this condition.
Correction
If a lead or pull condition exists, first check and adjust tire inflation pressure to specification (30 psi). If the vehicle is equipped with non-directional tires, the tires should be rotated according to Figure 1. If the pull is to the right, the left front and right rear tires should swap positions. If the pull is to the left, the right front and left rear tires should be swapped.
If the pull condition still exists, vehicle alignment should be checked. To correct for a RIGHT pull, set wheel alignment with .4° cross caster and cross camber as follows:
Left Right
Caster 4.00° 4.40°
Camber +.20° -.20°
Sum Toe 0° +/- .2°
To correct for a LEFT pull, set wheel alignment to the following specifications with right and left caster and camber as EQUAL as possible:
Caster 4.80° +/- .5°
Camber .40° +/- .5°
Sum Toe 0° +/- .2°
