Engine Control Module: Service and Repair
PCM:
CAUTION:
^ To prevent possible Electrostatic Discharge damage to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), do NOT touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board.
^ To prevent internal PCM damage, the ignition must be "OFF" when disconnecting or reconnecting power to PCM (for example, battery cable, PCM pigtail, PCM fuse and jumper cables).
NOTE: When replacing the production PCM with a service PCM (controller), it is important to transfer the broadcast code and production PCM number to the service PCM label. Do not record on PCM cover. This will allow positive identification of PCM parts throughout the service life of the vehicle.
REMOVAL
1. Negative battery cable.
2. PCM mounting hardware.
3. Connectors from PCM.
4. PCM from passenger side location.
5. PCM access cover.
6. Knock Sensor (KS) module.
NOTES:
^ The KS module must be transferred to the replacement PCM.
^ The replacement PCM is supplied without a Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) program and must be programmed before the vehicle will run.
EEPROM PROGRAMMING
1. Remove the new PCM from its packaging and check the service number to make sure it is the same as the defective PCM.
2. Remove the access cover.
3. Set-up:
^ Battery is charged.
^ Ignition is "ON."
^ Battery / cigarette lighter connection secure.
^ Data Link Connector (DLC) must be secure.
4. Refer to up-to-date Techline terminal / equipment user's instructions.
5. If PCM fails to program, do the following:
^ Check all PCM connections.
^ Check Techline terminal / equipment for latest software version.
^ Try again to program the PCM. If it fails again, replace the PCM. Replacement PCM must be programmed.
6. If vehicle is equipped with an aftermarket anti-theft system, it may require a reset procedure.
Functional Check
Use Techline terminal/equipment to perform the "Dash Lamps" output test, which verifies proper operation of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) "Service Engine Soon."
INSTALLATION
1. Knock Sensor (KS) module.
2. Access cover on PCM.
3. Connectors to PCM.
4. PCM to mounting bracket.
5. Negative battery cable.
