Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:
FRONT
1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Fuel Pressure Relief. Under Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/System Diagnosis/Procedures/Diagnostic Charts/A Charts/Chart A-7 Fuel System Diagnosis.
2. Remove intake manifold, camshaft carrier and exhaust manifold as outlined under Intake Manifold, Camshaft, and Exhaust Manifold.
3. Remove right cooling fan assembly.
4. Remove oil level indicator tube.
5. Disconnect temperature sending unit connector.
6. Remove cylinder head bolts, then the cylinder head.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install cylinder head gasket with metal tabs between cylinders facing up.
b. Using sequence shown in Fig. 5, torque bolts in two steps; first step to 44 ft. lbs., second step an additional 90° turn using torque/angle meter tool No. J-36660, or equivalent.
REAR
1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Fuel Pressure Relief. Under Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/System Diagnosis/Procedures/Diagnostic Charts/A Charts/Chart A-7 Fuel System Diagnosis.
2. Remove intake manifold, camshaft carrier and exhaust manifold as outlined under Intake Manifold,Camshaft Carrier and Exhaust Manifold.
3. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector.
4. Remove rear timing belt tensioner bracket.
5. Remove cylinder head bolts then the cylinder head and gasket.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install cylinder head gasket with metal tabs between cylinders facing up.
b. Using sequence shown in Fig. 5, torque bolts in two steps; first step to 44 ft. lbs., second step an additional 90° turn using torque/angle meter tool No. J-36660, or equivalent.
