Axle Shaft Assembly: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Loosen axle nut and washer one turn.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
3. Remove brake caliper, bracket assembly and rotor.
4. Loosen four hub/bearing assembly to knuckle attaching bolts.
5. Remove ABS speed sensor mounting bolt, then position sensor aside.
6. Remove hub and bearing mounting bolts.
7. On right side drive axle, separate drive axle from the transaxle using axle shaft remover tool No. J-3308, extension tool No. J-29794 and puller tool No. J-2619-01, or equivalents, Fig. 9 .
8. On left side drive axle, using frame for leverage, separate drive axle from transaxle with a screwdriver or prybar in groove provided on inner joint.
9. On either axle, remove axle with hub and bearing assembly through the knuckle.
10. Remove axle nut, then separate axle from hub and bearing assembly using separator tool No. J-28733-A, or equivalent, Fig. 8 .
INSTALLATION
1. Loosely assemble axle to hub and bearing assembly, using a new nut and washer.
2. Install axle and bearing assembly through knuckle and into transaxle.
3. Install axle into transaxle using seal protectors J-37292-B, or equivalent.
4. Loosely secure hub and bearing to knuckle.
5. Seat snap ring by placing a screwdriver into groove on joint housing and tapping until seated, Fig. 9 .
6. Grasp inner housing and pull outward. If snap ring is properly seated, axle will remain in place.
7. Install ABS sensor assembly.
8. Tighten hub and bearing bolts to specifications.
9. Install rotor and brake caliper.
10. Install tire and wheel assembly, then lower vehicle.
11. Tighten axle nut to specification.
