Rear Window Panel - Passenger Side Creaking Noise

FILE IN SECTION: 10 - Body

BULLETIN NO.: 53-16-13

DATE: June, 1995

SUBJECT:
Creak at the Passenger Side of the Rear Window Panel
(Pry Outboard Corner of Rear Window Panel Extension from Panel Gusset Reinforcement to Create a 3 mm Gap)

Models:
1995 Chevrolet Cavalier
1995 Pontiac Sunfire

CONDITION

Some owners may comment on a creak emitting from the passenger side of the rear window panel.

CAUSE

The above condition may be caused by an interference between the rear window panel extension and the rear window panel gussett reinforcement.

CORRECTION

Remove or Disconnect

1. Rear seatback and rear seat cushion, refer to Section 10-10 in the Service Manual.

2. Quarter trim panel, refer to Section 10-7 in the Service Manual.

3. Rear window panel trim, refer to Section 10-8 in the Service Manual.

The rear window panel extension (see Figure 1, Item 3) is the most outboard panel of the rear window panel and the rear window panel gusset reinforcement (see Figure 1, Item 2) is the triangular member which ties the rear window to the wheelhouse (see Figure 1).

Pry the forward, lower, outboard corner (see Figure 1, Item 1) of the rear window panel extension (see Figure 1, Item 3) away from the rear window panel gusset reinforcement (see Figure 1, Item 2) so there is a 3 mm (0.125 in.) gap. The two panels should remain permanently out of contact in this area.

Install or Connect

1. Rear window panel trim, refer to Section 10-8 in the Service Manual.

2. Quarter trim panel, refer to Section 10-7 in the Service Manual.

3. Rear seatback and rear seat cushion, refer to Section 10-10 in the Service Manual.
