Noise
Torque converter whine is usually noticed when the vehicle is stopped and the transaxle is in drive or reverse. The noise will increase when engine RPM is in- creased. The noise will stop when engine RPM is increased. The noise will stop when the vehicle is moving or when the torque converter clutch is applied because both halves of the convener are turning at the same speed.1. To make sure noise is actually coming from the converter, perform stall test as follows:
a. With engine running, place foot on brake.
b. Put gear selector in Drive position.
c. Depress accelerator to approximately 1200 RPM for no more than six seconds. Do not continue for more than six seconds or damage to the transaxle may occur.
d. Listen for torque converter noise. If torque converter is at fault, noise will increase under this load.
2. Torque convener should be replaced under any of the following conditions:
a. External leaks in hub weld area.
b. Converter hub is scored or damaged.
c. Converter pilot is broken, damaged or fits poorly into crankshaft.
d. Steel panicles are found after flushing the cooler and cooler lines.
e. Pump is damaged or steel particles are found in converter.
f. Vehicle has TCC shudder and/or no TCC apply. Converter clutch material may be glazed.
g. Converter has an imbalance which cannot be corrected.
h. Converter is contaminated with engine coolant/antifreeze. Internal failure of stator roller clutch.
j. Excessive endplay.
k. Heavy clutch debris due to overheating.
l. Steel particles or clutch lining material found in fluid filter or on magnet when no internal parts in unit are worn or damaged. Indicates that lining material came from converter.
3. Torque converter should not be replaced under the following conditions:
a. Oil has an odor or is discolored and there is no evidence of metal or clutch facing particles.
b. Threads in one or more of the converter bolt holes are damaged. Correct with thread insert.
c. Transaxle failure did not display evidence of damage or worn internal parts, steel particles or clutch plate lining material in unit and inside fluid filter.
