Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints: Service Precautions

On models equipped with tripot joints on inboard axles, care must be taken not to overextend joints. When either or both ends are disconnected, overextending the tripot joint could result in internal joint separation.

On vehicles equipped with ball type constant velocity inboard joints, install inner drive joint seal protector tool No. J-34754, or equivalent, on inboard seal and install axle boot protector tool No. J-28712, or equivalent, on outboard seal if necessary. On vehicles equipped with tripot inboard joints, install axle boot seal protector tool No. J-28712, or equivalent, on outboard seal and tool No. J-33162, or equivalent, on inboard seal, if necessary.
