Subject:
Anti-Theft Alarm May Sound After Vehicle Gets Wet
(Reseat Door Grommet)

Models:
1996-98 Chevrolet Camaro
1996-98 Pontiac Firebird

Condition

Some owners may comment that the anti-theft alarm sounds when the vehicle is wet, usually after going through the rain or a car wash. The interior lights may also come on. The condition will normally correct itself when the vehicle is dry.

Cause

The grommet for the wiring harness in the door may not be fully seated. This could allow water to enter the wiring harness and travel to the door ajar switch in the bottom of the "A" pillar. The switch can short out, telling the Body Control Module (BCM) that the door is open.

The door jam switch was replaced by a mini-wedge design early in production in 1998 to eliminate this condition.

Correction

1. Make sure the grommet is fully seated. No additional sealer is needed if the grommet is installed properly.

2. Check the door jam switch, wiring, and connector for signs of corrosion, and repair or replace if needed.
