Condition

Some customers may comment about an engine speed flare, up to 500 rpm, during gear shifts. This condition is most prominent when shifting gears at engine speeds below 2500 rpm.

Cause

After checking for and repairing any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) that may be present, check the clutch anticipate/cruise release switch for proper operation. The clutch anticipate switch is normally closed when the clutch pedal is in the up position. The switch opens when the clutch pedal is depressed (down position). If the circuit is not operating correctly, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will not receive proper information during gear shifts that are made below 2500 rpm which could cause the flare condition.

Correction

1. Repair the clutch anticipate/cruise release circuit as required.

2. Flash PCM with new calibration. The new calibration is less sensitive to clutch anticipate switch information.

3. Test drive the vehicle after the above repairs to verify that the condition has been corrected.

Parts Information

The new flash calibration is available beginning with the April 4, 1996 CD number 7 from GM Service Technology Group. Do not attempt to order the calibrations from GMSPO. They are programmed into the vehicle's Powertrain Control Module (PCM) via a Techline Tool Device.
