INSTALLATION
1. Measure balance shaft clearances, Fig. 6.
2. Ensure old rear main oil seal gasket is removed and no debris remains.
Fig. 7 Balance Shaft Installation:
3. Coat new bushing with clean engine oil and install with balance shaft installation tool Nos. J 36995-2A, J 36995-3A, J 36995-1 and J 36995-8, or equivalents, Fig. 7. Rear bushing will be installed to correct depth when bushing fully contacts balance shaft bore or the cylinder block/transaxle mounting flange.
4. Remove installation tools and coat front balance shaft bearing with clean engine oil, then install balance shaft into block using balance shaft installation tool Nos. J 36996 and J 21465-13, or equivalents.
5. Temporarily install balance shaft retainer and bolts.
6. Install balance shaft drive gear and bolt, using suitable thread locking compound and torque to 16 ft. lbs. plus an additional 70° using tool No. J 36660, or equivalent.
7. Inspect balance shaft end play and radial play at both front and rear. End play should be 0.0-0.008 inches, front radial play should be 0.0-0.0011 inches and rear play should be 0.0005-0.0047 inches.
8. With camshaft sprocket temporarily installed, rotate camshaft so timing mark is straight down.
Fig. 8 Timing Assembly:
9. With the camshaft sprocket and gear removed, rotate balance shaft so timing mark, Fig. 8, is straight down.
10. Install camshaft gear and turn crankshaft so No. 1 piston is at TDC.
11. Install timing chain and camshaft sprocket. Timing gear lash is 0.002-0.005 inches, measured at four places, every 1/4 turn.
12. Install balance shaft front bearing retainer and bolts and tighten to specifications.
13. Install front cover and lifter guide retainer and bolt.
14. Install lower and upper intake manifold.
15. Install flywheel.
16. Replace rear oil seal housing.
17. Install radiator and A/C condenser, if necessary.
18. Recharge A/C system, if necessary.
