Timing Cover: Service and Repair

ENGINE FRONT COVER REPLACEMENT

Removal Procedure

Tools Required: J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

1. Drain the engine coolant.
2. Remove the air cleaner.
3. Remove the air cleaner outlet rear duct.
Remove the resonator duct.





4. Remove the radiator outlet hose from the front cover.
5. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle suitably.
6. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
7. Remove the oil pan to the front cover bolts.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Remove the electrical connections.
10. Remove the crankshaft sensor shield.
11. Remove the water pump.
12. Remove the engine front cover studs and bolts.





13. Remove the engine front cover.
14. Remove the engine front cover gasket.

15. If you are replacing the front cover, disassemble the following parts:
- The oil filter adapter and pressure relief valve.
- The camshaft sensor.

16. Clean the engine front cover and the engine block gasket surfaces.
17. Inspect the engine for damage to the seals or gasket surfaces.

18 If the front cover has been replaced, assemble the following parts:
- The oil filter adapter and pressure relief valve.
- The camshaft sensor.



Installation Procedure
1. Install the crankshaft front oil seal.
2. Install the engine front cover gasket.
3. Loosen the oil pan bolts, and drop the oil pan slightly in order to add clearance for the front cover.





4. Install the engine front cover.
- Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 or equivalent to the threads of the bolts and studs.
- The crankshaft sensor requires no adjustment.

5. Install the engine front cover bolts and studs.
- Tighten the bolts and studs to 15 N.m (11 lb. ft.).
- Use the J 36660-A in order to rotate the bolts and studs 40 degrees.

6. Install the water pump.
7. Install the crankshaft sensor shield.
8. Install the electrical connections.
9. Raise and support the vehicle suitably.
10. Install the oil pan to the front cover bolts.
- Tighten the bolts to 14 N.m (125 lb. in.).

11. Install the crankshaft balancer.





12. Install the radiator inlet hose to the front cover.
13. Install the drive belt tensioner.
14. Install the air cleaner.
15. Install the air cleaner outlet rear duct.
16. Install the resonator duct.
17. Refill the engine coolant.
