Fuel Tank: Testing and Inspection

NOTE: Place a dry chemical (class B) fire extinguisher near work area.

Before removing the fuel tank for a suspected leak, make sure that fuel pipes are not leaking onto the tank. Once removed, make sure that fuel is not leaking around the fuel pump assembly or the fuel level sensor gaskets.

1. Relieve fuel system pressure.
2. Drain fuel tank.
3. Remove fuel tank.
4. Plug fuel feed pipe, fuel return pipe and fuel vapor hose on the fuel pump assembly.
5. Plug fuel filler neck opening.
6. Connect a piece of hose to the breather hose.
7. Submerge fuel tank in water or apply a soapy solution to the outside of the tank.
8. Apply 7 to 15 kPa (1 to 2 psi) air pressure to the breather hose.

- Air bubbles appearing from the fuel tank indicate a leak. Replace the fuel tank if it is leaking.
