Idle/Throttle Speed Control Unit: Testing and Inspection

IMPORTANT: When vacuum hoses have been disconnected and system components removed for service, be sure to reinstall components properly, and route and connect hoses correctly after service. Refer to the underhood "Vehicle Emission Control Information Label" for proper routing of vacuum hoses.

CAUTION: Before starting engine, place manual selector lever in "P" (automatic transaxle) or place gearshift control lever in neutral (manual transaxle), set parking brake and block drive wheels.

1. Inspect lead wires and hoses of the Throttle Body Fuel Injection (TBI) unit and Evaporative Emission (EVAP) systems for being connected securely.
2. Check ignition timing; adjust if necessary. Refer to Ignition System / Adjustments. Adjustments
3. Turn "OFF" all accessories (A/C, wipers, heater, lights, etc.).
4. Make sure Air Cleaner (ACL) is installed correctly.
5. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature idle (accessories "OFF").
6. Check accelerator cable for free movement and some play.
7. Connect a scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
8. Check idle speed on the Tech 1 scan tool:

^ Manual Transaxle Vehicles: 800 +/- 50 RPM.
^ Automatic Transaxle Vehicles: 850 +/- 50 RPM.

If the idle speed is out of specifications, inspect the Idle Speed Control (ISC)system. Do not attempt to manually adjust the engine idle speed. If manual adjustment is attempted, damage to the ISC system may occur.
9. Disconnect the scan tool.
