Direct Clutch
Measure
^ Tool Required:
- J 26900-5 Vernier Caliper
Direct clutch clearance by using a J 26900-5 and measuring the height between the direct clutch plate snap ring and the direct clutch flange. If the height between the direct clutch plate snap ring and the direct clutch flange measures 2.49 to 3.0h mm (0.098 to 0.120-inch), the direct clutch clearance is within specification. If the measurement is larger than specification, replace the clutch disc and or plates.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
^ Tool Required:
- J 23327 Clutch Spring Compressor
1. Clutch plate snap rind
2. Clutch flange.
3. Clutch discs and plates.
4. Install a J 23327 and place the direct clutch drum on a hydraulic press. Slowly compress the direct clutch spring seat until the clutch plate snap ring can be removed. DO NOT compress the direct clutch spring seat mere than what is necessary to remove the clutch plate snap ring.
CAUTION: Use a screwdriver to remove the direct clutch plate snap ring. Keep fingers and hands away from the hydraulic press arbor and the direct clutch return spring seat. Once the direct clutch plate snap ring is removed, release the hydraulic press slowly. If this precaution is not observed, serious injury may result.
5. Direct clutch spring seat snap ring.
6. Direct clutch spring seat and return spring assembly.
7. Direct clutch piston. Slowly apply low pressure compressed air into the drum fluid Inlet hole. If the piston does not pop out, carefully lift the piston out with needle nose pliers.
8. Direct clutch Inner piston seal from drum.
9. Direct clutch outer piston seal from piston.
Inspect
- Direct clutch piston check valve (steel ball) for free movement and for leakage by using low pressure compressed air. If leaks exist, replace direct clutch piston.
- Direct clutch drum for burrs, scars, or other damage.
- Direct clutch spring seat and return spring assembly for broken or loose springs or other damage.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
^ Tools Required:
- J 36850 Transjel (R) Transmission Assembly Lubricant
- J 23327 Clutch Spring Compressor
1. New inner seal to direct clutch drum. Lubricate with J 36850.
2. New outer seal to direct clutch piston. Lubricate with J 36850.
3. Direct clutch piston into direct clutch drum.
Important
- Use caution not to twist, cut or tear seals.
4. Direct clutch return spring assembly.
5. Direct clutch spring seat.
6. A J 23327 clutch spring compressor and place the direct clutch drum on a hydraulic press. Slowly compress the direct clutch spring seat until the direct clutch plate snap ring can be fitted. DO NOT compress the direct clutch return spring more than what is necessary to install the direct clutch plate snap ring.
7. Direct clutch plate snap ring.
Important
- Make sure that the snap ring is securely seated in the four projections of the spring seat. DO NOT compress the return spring assembly more than what is necessary to fit the clutch plate snap ring.
NOTICE: When installing new clutch discs in the 1 st-reverse brake, forward clutch or direct clutch assemblies, the new clutch discs MUST be soaked in Dexron III automatic transmission fluid GM P/N 12341643, or equivalent, two hours prior to installation. This causes the clutch material to permeate with fluid which will aid in ease of assembly and prevent clutch overheating on first time engagement.
8. Direct clutch discs and plates in the following order:
A. Plate
B. Disc
C. Plate
D. Plate
E. Disc
9. Direct clutch flange.
10. Direct clutch plate snap ring.
Measure
- Direct clutch clearance by using a vernier caliper and measuring the height between the direct clutch plate snap ring and the direct clutch flange as previously outlined.
- If the measurement falls out of specification with the new direct clutch discs and plates installed, install a flange of a different thickness. There are two sizes of clutch flanges available:
Thickness 3.00 mm (0.118-inch)
Thickness 3.37 mm (0.132-inch)
Inspect
- Direct clutch piston for operation by slowly applying low pressure compressed air through the drum fluid inlet hole. Piston should return to its original position after air pressure is released.
