Removal

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

^ Tools Required:
- J 28467-A Universal Support Fixture
- J 28467-89 Engine Support Fixture Adapters; (Geo Metro)
- J 28712 Drive Axle Shaft Boot Protectors

1. Negative (-) battery cable. Refer to Starting and Charging.
2. Backup lamp switch electrical connector.





3. Loosen clutch release lever bolt and nut.
4. Clutch release lever from clutch release shaft.





5. Two clutch cable bracket bolts from clutch cable bracket and set clutch cable and clutch cable bracket aside.
6. One bolt and negative (-) battery cable and transaxle hanger from transaxle.





7. Two bolts from gearshift guide case and set engine wiring harness and engine wiring harness bracket aside.
8. Speedometer cable retaining clip and remove speedometer cable from speedometer driven gear case.
9. Two upper right case-to-engine block mounting bolts.
10. Support engine using J 28467-A with J 28467-89.
11. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
12. Place a drain pan or suitable container under transaxle.





13. Transaxle oil level/filler plug from transaxle.
14. Transaxle drain plug using a 10 mm hex head socket or wrench, and drain transaxle oil.
15. Remove drain pan from under transaxle.
16. Support transaxle with a suitable hydraulic jack.
17. Install J 28712 on the differential-side and the wheel-side joints of both drive axles.
18. Both drive axles. Refer to Drive Axle Assembly in Drive Axle.
19. Two bolts and flywheel cover from transaxle.





20. Control joint shaft through bolt and nut at transaxle, gearshift shaft and separate gearshift control joint and gearshift control shaft from transaxle.
21. Four gearshift control lever guide plate bolts and separate extension rod from grearshift control lever guide plate.
22. One nut and two washers at extension rod mounting stud and separate extension rod from transaxle.
23. Starter motor electrical connections from starter motor.
24. Two starter motor retaining bolts and starter motor from transaxle.
25. Rear transaxle mount through bolt and nut from rear transaxle mount.





26. Three bolts from left transaxle mounting bracket.
27. Two lower right case-to-engine block mounting bolts.
28. Transaxle from engine by carefully moving the transaxle away from the engine toward the left side of the engine compartment until the input shaft is clear of the clutch pressure plate cover. Then, very slowly lower the transaxle jack making sure there are no obstructions.
