Condition
(Figure 1)
Some owners of vehicles with a Hydra-Matic 4T40-E transaxle built prior to June 17, 1996 (Julian Date 169) may experience an MIL light ON with no noticeable change in vehicle performance due to a DTC P1887 being set.
Cause
(Figure 2)
A majority of causes for the above code have been due to a delamination or tear of the seal within the oil pump bearing and seal assembly (200).
Correction
Follow the procedure for DTC P1887 within the diagnosis section of the Service Manual. (Refer to updated procedure listed in Corporate Bulletin Number 67-71-41.) If this procedure leads you to a transaxle problem (Step 14), continue with the following removal and replacement procedure.
Removal and Replacement Procedure 1. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
2. Remove the pump assembly from the valve body assembly. (Refer to the unit repair manual for proper procedure.)
3. Inspect the oil pump bearing and seal assembly (200) for delamination or tearing of the seal. (Figure 2)
4. If the above condition exists, replace the oil pump assembly.
Important:
The oil pump bearing and seal assembly is not serviced separately and is only available with the oil pump assembly.
