OBDII Hand Held Diagnostic Computer - Equipment Purchase Considerations
Models:
1996 and Future Passenger Cars and Trucks
General Motors Service Technology Group has developed the TECH 2 diagnostic hand held computer to service 1997 Model Year and future GM Passenger Cars and Trucks. The TECH 2 is more powerful than the Tech 1, having more memory and improved display capabilities.
The Tech 1, coupled with the VIN (part number 7000041), will satisfy all GM vehicle diagnostic scanner requirements on pre-1997 vehicles.
While the Tech 1 will be incapable of programming the more powerful on-board computers which will be used in the 1997 model year, it will still be required to diagnose 1996 and older vehicles.
The TECH 2 will be shipped to all GM dealerships as an essential tool prior to the shipment of 1997 model vehicles. Depending on model introductions,
TECH 2 shipments will start in the first quarter of 1996.
Representations from some service tool suppliers that their tool will be the only tool available in time for the 1997 vehicles is misleading and should be
disregarded.
GM-STG does not recommend the purchase of any additional diagnostic computer (scanner) apart from the essential equipment at this time.
