Convertible Top Will Not Operate (Replace Improperly Crimped Terminal(s) and/or Relay, and/or Drive Motor(s))

Models:
1995-96 Chevrolet Cavalier (Convertible)
1995-96 Pontiac Sunfire (Convertible)

Condition

Some owners may comment that the vehicle's convertible top will not operate.

Cause

Condition may be due to:

^ Improperly crimped drive motor electrical connector terminals, or

^ Faulty drive motor(s), or

^ Folding top relay.

Correction

For improperly crimped drive motor electrical connector terminals:

1. Check if the folding top relay is a Potter and Brumfield non-timed relay, P/N 12065122. If so, it should be replaced with a Packard Electric timed relay, P/N 12135143.

2. Disconnect the drive motor electrical connector from the main body harness.

3. Remove both terminals from drive motor electrical connector.





4. Visually inspect the terminals for proper crimping. Refer to Figure 1.

5. Replace terminal(s) if improperly crimped.

For faulty drive motor(s):

1. Check if the folding top relay is a Potter and Brumfield non-timed relay, P/N 12065122. If so, it should be replaced with a Packard Electric timed relay, P/N 12135143.

2. Refer to Section 8A-121-5 Chart # 4, RH Folding Top Motor Does Not Operate, or 81-121-6 Chart # 5, LH Folding Top Motor Does Not Operate, of the 1996 Service Manual for diagnosis.

3. If a problem still exists, refer to Section 8A-121, Symptom Table, of the Service Manual for diagnosis.
