Door - Rattles When Closing

Door Rattles When Closing
(Adjust Bracket/Install Tape)

Models:
1995-2000 Chevrolet Cavalier Convertible
1995-2000 Pontiac Sunfire Convertible

Some customers may comment on the following conditions:

Condition # 1

The door rattles during closing with the glass in the full down position.

Condition # 2

The door rattles during closing with the glass in the up or down position.

Cause # 1

There may be too much clearance between the door glass and the up stop bracket.

Cause # 2

There may be too much clearance between the front door lower rear run channel bracket to the adjusting stud.

Correction # 1

1. Remove the door handle bezel.

2. Remove the mirror patch bezel.

3. Remove the armrest and the trim pad screws.

4. Remove the trim panel.





5. With a pair of needle nose pliers, bend the up stop (1) outboard 3 mm (1/8 in).

6. Reinstall the trim pad.

7. Reinstall the armrest and the trim pad screws.

8. Reinstall the mirror patch bezel.

9. Reinstall the door handle bezel.

Correction # 2

1. Remove the door handle bezel.

2. Remove the mirror patch bezel.

3. Remove the armrest and the trim pad screws.

4. Remove the trim panel.

5. Remove the door water deflector (partially).

6. Prior to the next step, mark or measure the current location of the adjusting stud for ease of assembly.

7. Remove the lower nut from the adjusting stud.

8. Remove the adjusting stud and apply Teflon(R) tape, or equivalent, approximately four threads from the end of the stud and wrap around the stud twice (see (2) in Figure).

9. Reinstall the adjusting stud to the same position as in Step 6.

10. Reinstall the door water deflector.

11. Reinstall the trim pad.

12. Reinstall the armrest and the trim pad screws.

13. Reinstall the mirror patch bezel.

14. Reinstall the door handle bezel.
