Shift Interlock Cable: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove console as follows:
a. Remove shift handle retainer (3) Fig. 11, then shift handle.
b. Remove console compartment liner (1) Fig. 12.
c. Remove console mounting screws (3) then lift out console.
3. Remove lower left under dash panel.
4. Remove instrument cluster as described under Instrument Panel,Gauges and Warning Indicators.
5. Loosen lower steering column bracket bolts, then lower steering column.
6. Ensure shift lever is in park position, then turn ignition to Run position.
7. Do not attempt following steps unless ignition switch is in Run position.
8. Insert a suitable screwdriver into slot of ignition switch inhibitor (4) Fig. 13, depress cable latch, then lift cable from inhibitor.
9. Move cable connector lock (1) at shifter base to Up position, then remove cable from park lock lever pin.
10. Depress two cable latches, then remove cable from shifter base.
11. Remove cable from clips, then cable from vehicle.

INSTALLATION
To aid in positioning new cable, leave shipping cover/gauge on cable until instructed to remove it in procedure.
1. Ensure cable lock button (1) Fig. 13, is in Up position and shift lever is in Park position, then snap cable into shifter base.
2. Ensure ignition switch is in Run position, then snap cable into ignition switch inhibitor.
3. Remove shipping cover/gauge, then turn ignition switch to Off position.
4. Install cable end onto shift park lock lever pin.
5. Push cable connector forward to remove all slack from cable, then with no load on cable snap cable lock button down.
6. Check function of park lock system as described under Park Lock Cable Functional Test.
7. Raise steering column to proper position, then tighten lower column bracket bolts.
8. Install instrument cluster, left lower dash panel and console.
9. Connect battery ground cable.
