Steering Column Housing

Removing SIR Coil Assembly:

J 23653-SIR Lock Plate Compressor
J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

Remove or Disconnect

1. Negative (-) battery cable.
2. Disable the SIR system.
3. Air bag module and steering wheel.

NOTICE: SIR coil assembly (3) will become uncentered if:
1) Steering column is separated from steering gear and allowed to rotate.
2) Centering spring is pushed down, letting hub rotate while coil (3) is removed from steering column. If this occurs refer to "Centering the SIR Coil Assembly" to center coil (3).

4. Retaining ring (2).
5. SIR coil assembly (3).
^ Let SIR coil assembly (3) hang freely.
6. Wave washer (4).
7. Wire restraint clip (56) from bottom of steering column jacket support assembly (49).
8. Park lock cable (57) from bottom of bearing & housing assembly (11).
A. Key in "RUN" position.
B. Push on locking tab on end of cable assembly (57) and remove.
9. Shaft lock retaining ring (5) using J 23653-SIR to push down shaft lock (6).
^ Dispose of ring (5).
10. Shaft lock (6).
11. Turn signal cancel cam assembly (7).
12. Upper bearing spring (8).
13. Upper bearing inner race seat (9).
14. Inner race (10).
15. Tilt column to "UP" position.
16. Spring retainer (50).
^ Using a cross recess screwdriver, push retainer down and turn counterclockwise to release.
17. Tilt wheel spring (47) and spring guide (46).
18. Shift lever to "PARK" position to gain access to pivot pins (57).
19. Two pivot pins (48) using J 21854-01.
20. Bearing & housing assembly (11).
^ Pull tilt arm to disengage steering wheel lock shoes from dowel pins in steering column jacket support assembly (49).
^ Vehicle wire harness from ignition switch assembly (19).

Install or Connect

1. Bearing & housing assembly (11).
^ Using tilt lever position lock shoes to dowel pins.
^ Rotate housing assembly (11) until holes for pivot pins (48) line up.
2. Two pivot pins (48).
A. Shift lever to "PARK" position.
B. Lubricate with lithium grease.
C. Press pins until firmly seated two places.
D. Stake pins (48) three locations two places.
3. Spring guide (46) to tilt wheel spring (47).
^ Lubricate with lithium grease.
4. Spring retainer (50).
^ Using a cross recess screwdriver push retainer down and turn clockwise to lock in place.
5. Inner race (10).
6. Upper bearing inner race seat (9).
7. Upper bearing spring (8).
8. Turn signal cancel cam assembly (7).
9. Shaft lock (6).
^ Align inner block tooth of lock plate to block tooth of race & upper shaft assembly (26).
^ Lubricate with grease, synthetic (service kit).
10. New shaft lock retaining ring (5) using J 23653-SIR to push down shaft lock (6).
^ Ring (5) must be firmly seated in groove on shaft.
11. Park lock cable (42) to bottom of bearing & housing assembly (11).
12. Center race & upper shaft assembly (26) and SIR coil assembly (3).
A. Wheels straight ahead.
^ Block tooth and centering mark on shaft assembly (26) at 12 o'clock position.
B. Ignition switch to "LOCK" position.
C. Ensure coil (3) is centered; refer to the illustration.
13. Wave washer (4).

NOTICE: New SIR coil assembly (3) will be pre-centered. Install new coil, remove and dispose of centering tab.

14. SIR coil assembly (3).
A. Ensure shaft (26) and coil (3) are centered.
B. Align coil (3) with horn tower and slide onto shaft (26).
15. Retaining ring (2).
^ Ensure ring seats securely in groove on upper steering shaft (26).
16. Route lower coil wire along steering column jacket assembly (52) and secure with wire restraint clip (56).
17. Steering wheel and air bag module; refer to service procedures.
18. If all service operations are completed, enable the SIR system.
19. Negative (-) battery cable.
