Rack and Pinion Boot

^ Tool Required:
- J 22610 Boot Clamp Installer
- Or Equivalent

REMOVAL
Remove or disconnect the following:
1. Rack and pinion steering assembly from vehicle.
2. Lock plate (38) from inner tie rod bolts (37) and dispose of lock plate.
3. Inner tie rod bolts (37), bolt support plate (36) and inner tie rods (26) or (41).
4. Cylinder lines (2) and (12) with O-ring seals (15) attached from rack and pinion steering assembly.
5. Mounting grommets (1), boot clamps (20) and (25) by cutting.
6. Slide boot retaining bushing (24) from rack and pinion boot (22).
7. Slide boot assembly consisting of rack and pinion boot (22), boot retaining bushing (21), and center housing cover washers (23), captured in the rack and pinion boot (22) from rack and pinion housing (16).

INSTALLATION
Install or connect the following:
1. Slide boot retaining bushing (21) from rack and pinion boot (22).
2. Slide new boot clamp (25) onto rack and pinion boot (22):
3. Slide boot retaining bushing (21) back into rack and pinion boot (22).
^ Coat inner lip of boot retaining bushing (21) lightly with grease for ease of assembly.
^ Slide assembly onto rack and pinion housing assembly (16).
^ Be sure center housing cover washers (23) are in place on rack and pinion boot (22).
4. Inner tie rod bolt (37) through center housing cover washers (23), and into insert and rack guide.
^ Lightly thread bolt into rod and rack assembly to keep the components in proper alignment.
5. Boot retaining bushing (24) onto cylinder tube of rack and pinion housing (1). Slide into end of rack and pinion boot (22).
6. Slide boot clamp (20) over cylinder end of rack and pinion housing (16) and position on rack and pinion boot (22).
7. Slide rack and pinion boot (21) and boot retaining bushing (20) until seated in bushing groove in housing (16).
8. Position boot clamp (25) on rack and pinion boot and crimp clamp using J 22610.
9. Position bridge of boot clamp (20) over split in boot retaining bushing (21) and crimp clamp using J 22610.





NOTE: Bridge of boot clamp (20) must be crimped over split in boot retaining bushing (21) to ensure proper sealing.

10. With O-ring seals (15) in position, cylinder lines (2) and (12) to rack and pinion housing assembly.
^ Tighten:
- Fittings at valve end of housing to 18 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).
- Fittings at cylinder end to 28 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
11. Inner tie rod bolts (37) through holes in bolt support plate (36) and inner pivot bushing (35), which is part of inner tie rod (26) and (41), center housing cover washer (23), insert and rack guide into threaded hole in steering gear rack.
^ Tighten inner tie rod bolts (37) to 90 Nm (65 ft. lbs.).
12. New lock plate (38) with notches in the proper position over flats of inner tie rod bolts (37).
