Differential Case Assembly
^ Tool Required:- J 22919 Bearing Installer
- Or Equivalent
^ Before assembling, apply oil to the bearing inner and outer race surfaces.
ASSEMBLE
1. Pinion gears, pinion gear thrust washers, side gears and side gear thrust washers into differential case.
2. Pinion shaft into differential case; secure with pinion shaft roll pin.
Measure
Differential side gear backlash using a feeler gage. Differential side gear backlash should fall within 0.03 to 0.08 mm (0.0012 to 0.0031 inch). If differential side gear backlash is greater than 0.08 mm (0 0031 inch), select larger size side gear thrust washers to bring differential side gear backlash within specification. If differential side gear backlash is less than 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch), select a smaller size side gear thrust washers to bring differential side gear backlash within specification.
Important: Heat the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) ring in approved preheat oven to approximately 95° C (200° F) just prior to installation. DO NOT use an acetylene torch or other open flame. Always allow preheated parts to cool after installation. DO NOT quench preheated parts with water. Use compressed air to help in cooling any preheated parts.
CAUTION: When handling parts that have been preheated for installation purposes, always wear leather welding gloves with a minimum amount of handling time. 11 this precaution is not observed' severe skin burns or personal injury may result.
3. New VSS ring onto differential case.
4. Right differential side bearings onto differential case using a J 22919 and a hydraulic press.
Important: Heat the differential ring gear in an approved preheat oven to approximately 50° to 100° C (122° to 212° F) just prior to installation. DO NOT use an acetylene torch or other open flame. Always allow preheated parts to air cool after installation. DO NOT quench preheated parts with water. Use compressed air to help in cooling any preheated parts.
5. Differential ring gear onto differential case; secure with ten bolts.
Tighten
Differential ring gear bolts to 107 Nm (79 ft. lbs.).
6. Left differential side bearing onto differential case using a J 22919 and a hydraulic press.
