Malfunction Indicator Lamp: Description and Operation

The CHECK ENGINE (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) Indicator in the Instrument Panel Cluster. The CHECK ENGINE Indicator will illuminate with the Ignition Switch in "RUN" position and engine off. The light will stay on a short time after the engine starts and should go out in 1 to 5 seconds. If the light stays on, or comes on while driving, service to the emission control system may be required. The indicator is controlled via a hardwired connection with the PCM and the IPC.
