Transaxle Assembly Removal and Replacement




Transmission Replacement

Removal Procedure


^ Tools Required
- J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Install J 28467-360.
3. Support the transaxle with a safety stand.

Raise the vehicle enough to take pressure off of the transaxle mounts.

4. Remove the left sound insulator.
5. Remove the clutch master cylinder pushrod from the clutch pedal.
6. Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly from the throttle body.
7. Remove the wire harness from the upper transaxle mount bracket.
8. Remove the upper transaxle mount to transaxle mount bracket.
9. Remove the upper transaxle mount.
10. Remove the clutch master cylinder from the clutch actuator cylinder.
11. Remove the ground cables from the transaxle mounting studs.





12. Disconnect the backup light switch connector.
13. Remove the transaxle vent tube.
14. Remove the rear transaxle mount bolts.
15. Remove the rear transaxle mount.
16. Lower the safety stand in order to ease transaxle removal and installation.
17. Raise the vehicle.
18. Support the vehicle with a safety stand.
19. Drain the transaxle.
20. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly.
21. Remove the left front inner splash shield.
22. Remove the front ABS WSS connectors.
23. Unroute the left side harness.





24. Remove the flywheel housing cover bolts.
25. Remove the flywheel housing cover.
26. Remove the vehicle speed sensor.





27. Remove the left and right ball joint nuts.
28. Separate the nuts.
29. Remove the left stabilizer link pin.
30. Remove the left U-bolt from the stabilizer bar.
31. Remove the left suspension support attaching bolts.
32. Remove the drive axles.
33. Remove the front lower transaxle mount bolts.
34. Remove the lower transaxle mount.
35. Attach the transaxle case to the support stand.
36. Remove the transaxle-to-engine mount bolts.
37. Remove the transaxle:
37.1. Slide the transaxle away from the engine.
37.2. Carefully lower the support stand.

Installation

1. Install the transaxle.
2. Install the transaxle-to-engine mount bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 90 Nm (66 lb ft).





3. Install the front transaxle mount.
4. Install the front lower transaxle mount bolts.





5. Install the flywheel housing cover.
6. Install the flywheel housing cover bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 75 Nm (55 lb ft).

7. Install the drive axles on the transaxle.
8. Install the suspension support and bolts.
9. Install the left U-bolt to the stabilizer bar.
10. Install the left and right ball joint nuts.
11. Install the left stabilizer link nuts.
12. Route the left side ABS WSS wiring harness.
13. Connect both front WSS harnesses to the sensor.
14. Install the inner splash shield.
15. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies.
16. Install the vehicle speed sensor.
17. Lower the vehicle.
18. Install the ground cables at the transaxle mounting studs.
19. Install the transaxle vent tube to the transaxle.
20. Connect the backup light switch connector.
21. Install the upper transaxle mount bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 75 Nm (55 lb ft).

22. Install the master cylinder to clutch actuator cylinder.
23. Install the rear transaxle mount.
24. Connect the wire harness at the mount bracket.
25. Remove J 28467-360.
26. Install the shift cables clamp and nut.

Tighten
Tighten the clamp nut to 10 Nm (89 lb in).

27. Install the air cleaner and duct assembly to the throttle body.
28. Install the clutch pushrod to the clutch pedal.
29. Install the left sound insulator.
30. Connect the negative battery cable.
31. Fill the transaxle with synchromesh transaxle fluid GM P/N 12345349 or equivalent.
