Timing Cover: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure1. Remove the torque axis mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
2. Remove the torque axis mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
3. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
4. Remove the drive belt tensioner assembly. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
5. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
6. Remove the crankshaft sensor shield.
7. Remove the crankshaft sensor.
8. Remove the oil pan to engine front cover bolts.
9. Remove the engine front cover attaching bolts.
10. Remove the engine front cover.
11. Inspect the timing chain for overall in and out movement. Movement should not exceed 25 mm (11 in).
12. Inspect the timing sprockets for wear.
13. Clean the gasket mating surfaces at the timing chain cover, and cylinder block.
14. If the oil pan gasket is excessively swollen, the oil pan must be removed and the gasket replaced.
Installation Procedure
- Tools Required
- J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter
1. Install the engine front cover gasket.
2. Install the engine front cover.
3. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 or equivalent to the bolt threads.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
4. Install the engine front cover attaching bolts.
- Tighten the bolts to 15 Nm (111 lb ft). Use the J 36660-A in order to rotate the bolts an additional 40 degrees.
5. Install the oil pan to the engine front cover bolts.
- Tighten the oil pan bolts to 14 Nm (125 lb in).
6. Install the drive belt tensioner assembly. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
Important: Do not adjust the crankshaft sensor.
7. Install the crankshaft sensor.
8. Install the crankshaft sensor shield.
Notice: Refer to Permanently Stretching Bolt Notice.
9. Install the crankshaft balancer and bolt. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
10. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
11. Install the torque axis mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
12. Install the torque axis mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
