Emission Control Systems: Service and Repair
Removal ProcedureServicing of the catalytic converter requires the replacement of the muffler and tailpipe as a complete one-piece unit.
1. Remove the oxygen sensor. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Replacement (Bank 1 Sensor 1) or Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Replacement (Bank 1 Sensor 2) in Computers and Controls.
2. Support the converter.
3. Remove the front pipe to catalytic converter nuts.
4. Remove the intermediate pipe hangers at body mounts.
5. Remove rear hanger at the tailpipe to chassis mount.
6. Remove the exhaust system from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Support the exhaust system at the converter.
2. Align the exhaust to the underbody of the vehicle.
3. Align the converter to the front pipe flange and start the nuts on the converter studs.
4. Connect the center exhaust hanger to the the underbody.
5. Connect the rear exhaust hanger to the the rear compartment rail,
6. Tighten the front pipe to converter nuts.
- Tighten the nuts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the oxygen sensor. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Replacement (Bank 1 Sensor 1) or Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Replacement (Bank 1 Sensor 2) in Computers and Controls.
