Vehicle Content Theft Alarm Sounds When Arming or is Too Sensitive (Replace Shock Sensor)

Condition

Some customers may comment on the Vehicle Content Theft Alarm sounding without cause or by natural occurrences such as wind and rain. Loud noises such as the slamming of a nearby car door may also set off the alarm. Customers may have already tried to adjust the sensitivity of the shock sensor without obtaining satisfactory results.

Cause

Beginning in February, 1999, a revised shock sensor was put into production on all models equipped with the Vehicle Content Theft Alarm (UA6). The revised sensor (second generation) may have a cracked capacitor, or an improperly soldered connector wire. This may cause the alarm to sound at any time when the system is armed. In addition, this design sensor may not have enough adjustment range (too sensitive) for reliable operation.

Correction

If the vehicle was built during the month of February, 1999, check the part number of the installed sensor. If the affected sensor (second generation) P/N 10430551 is present, replace the sensor as outlined under PROCEDURE below. If the previous design sensor (first generation) is installed, this bulletin does not apply. Consult the diagnostic tables in the Theft Deterrent sub-section of Body and Accessories in the Service Manual for further assistance.

Procedure

Replace the Vehicle Content Theft Alarm Shock Sensor with newly revised sensor (third generation) P/N 10440241. Refer to the Theft Deterrent sub-section of Body and Accessories in the 1999 or 2000 Service Manual for the replacement procedure. When installation is complete, it is not necessary to adjust the sensitivity of the replacement sensor as it has been pre-set to the optimum level for consistent vehicle protection. You may instruct the customer that if their personal preference is different from the factory setting, it is not required to bring the vehicle back for service. Sensitivity can be adjusted by the customer by referring them to the instructions in the vehicle's Owner's Manual under Shock Sensor.
