Band Apply Servo: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

^ Tools Required
- J 29714-A Servo Cover Depressor





1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the propeller shaft.
3. Remove the torque arm.
4. Remove the transmission support.
5. Remove the catalytic converter heat shield.
6. Lower the transmission.
7. Remove the two oil pan bolts below the 2-4 servo cover.
8. Install the J 29714-A to the oil pan rail.





9. Tighten the bolt on the J 29714-A to compress the servo cover.





10. Remove the servo cover retaining ring.
11. Loosen the bolt on the J 29714-A to release tension on the servo cover.





12. Remove the servo cover and O-ring seal. If the cover seems to be hung up on the seal, cut and remove the O-ring seal before removing the cover.
13. Remove the 2-4 servo from the transmission.
14. Inspect the 4th apply piston, 2-4 servo converter, 2nd apply piston, and the servo piston inner housing for the following defects:
^ Cracks
^ Scoring
^ Burrs and nicks


Installation Procedure

1. Install new seals on the servo pistons and the servo cover.
2. Install the 2-4 servo to the transmission.
3. Install the servo cover and O-ring seal.





4. Tighten the bolt on the J 29714-A to compress the servo cover.





5. Install the servo cover retaining ring.
6. Loosen the bolt on the J 29714-A to release tension on the servo cover.





7. Remove the J29714-A from the oil pan rail.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

8. Install the two oil pan bolts below the 2-4 servo cover.
^ Tighten the oil pan bolts to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).
9. Raise the transmission.
10. Install the catalytic converter heat shield.
11. Install the transmission support.
12. Remove the transmission jack.
13. Install the torque arm.
14. Install the propeller shaft.
