Parking Lock Cable: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure1. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in Restraint Systems.
2. Remove the left side instrument panel insulator.
3. Remove the instrument panel driver knee bolster and deflector.
4. Remove the front floor console.
5. Remove the body hinge pillar trim panel.
6. Place the transmission control into the PARK position.
7. Remove the steering column mounting bolts (2).
8. Remove the steering column mounting nuts (1).
9. Lower the steering column.
10. Reposition the floor carpet until the retaining clip on the tunnel is accessible.
11. Open the retaining clip on the driver side of the tunnel and remove the park lock cable (1).
12. Remove the park lock cable clip from the stud on the front of dash.
Important: Do not proceed to the next step with the ignition key in any other position.
13. Turn the ignition key to the RUN (4) position.
14. Release the park lock cable from the inhibitor attached to the steering column.
14.1. Insert a small flat bladed screwdriver into the inhibitor slot.
14.2. Depress the park lock cable latch.
14.3. Gently pull the park lock cable from the inhibitor.
15. Disconnect the park lock cable from the control lever pin.
16. Remove the park lock cable from the transmission control base.
17. Remove the park lock cable from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the park lock cable to the vehicle.
2. Place the transmission control into the PARK position.
3. Snap the cable connector lock button to the UP position.
4. Install the park lock cable to the transmission control base.
Important: Do not proceed to the next step with the ignition key in any other position.
5. Turn the ignition key to the RUN (4) position.
6. Snap the park lock cable into the inhibitor on the steering column.
7. Turn the ignition key to the LOCK position.
8. Connect the park lock cable to the control lever pin.
9. Push the cable connector forward in order to remove slack.
10. With no load applied to the connector nose, snap the cable connector lock button down.
11. Install the park lock cable clip to the stud on the front of dash.
12. Install the park lock cable (1) to the retaining clip on the driver side of the tunnel. Close the clip.
13. Reinstall the floor carpet.
14. Raise the steering column.
15. Install the shim to the outboard bracket stud.
16. Finger start the steering column mounting nuts (1).
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
17. Install the steering column mounting bolts (2).
^ Tighten the steering column mounting nuts (1) and bolts (2) to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
18. Install the front floor console.
19. Install the instrument panel driver knee bolster and deflector.
20. Install the left side instrument panel insulator.
21. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in Restraint Systems.
Functional Operation
1. Place the transmission control in the PARK position.
2. Turn the ignition key to the LOCK position (2).
3. Transmission control should not be able to be moved to another position.
4. The ignition key should be able to be removed from the ignition.
5. Turn the ignition key to the RUN position.
6. Place the transmission control in the NEUTRAL position.
7. The ignition key should not be able to be removed from the ignition.
8. If the above functional checks were met, the adjustment is complete.
9. If the ignition key can be removed in NEUTRAL, snap connector lock button to the UP position and repeat steps 9 and 10.
10. If the ignition key cannot be removed in the PARK position, snap the connector lock button to the UP position.
11. Move the cable connector nose rearward until the ignition key can be removed from the ignition.
12. Snap the lock button down.
