Liftgate Strut Replacement

Removal Procedure





Caution: When a lift gate hold open device is being removed or installed, provide alternate support to avoid the possibility of damage to the vehicle or personal injury.

1. Raise and suitably support the liftgate (1).
2. Remove the 2 bolts (4) which secure the support to the liftgate (1).
3. Loosen the following components in order to gain access to the support ball stud:

* The headliner
* The rear pillar cover

Important: The liftgate support cylinders are gas-filled, DO NOT attempt to disassemble any part of the support. Replace the support as a unit.


4. Unscrew the liftgate support ball stud (2).
5. Remove the support (3) from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure





Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

Important: When installing a new support, be careful not to scratch or contaminate the support rod extension with dirt or oil. Scratches, dirt or oil could cause damage to the support by tearing or scoring the support seal.


1. Install the support to the liftgate (1). Secure the support with 2 bolts (4).
2. Screw the ball stud into place on the vehicle.

Tighten the support ball stud to 45 Nm (33 lb ft).

3. If you are installing a new support (3) and ball stud, use a rubber mallet in order to knock the support (3) onto the ball stud.
4. Reposition the following components:

* The rear pillar cover
* The headliner

5. Lower the liftgate (1).
