Oil Pump Replacement

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Remove the engine oil pan and the oil pump strainer. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement.
4. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement.
5. Remove the lower generator mounting bracket.





6. Place a slotted screwdriver into a square hole (1) in the clutch housing (2) in order to lock the crankshaft on a vehicle equipped with a manual transaxle.





7. Place a slotted screwdriver between the teeth of the flywheel (1) in order to lock the crankshaft on a vehicle equipped with an automatic transaxle.





8. Remove the crankshaft timing gear bolt (1).
9. Remove the crankshaft timing gear (2).
10. Remove the timing belt guide (3).
11. Lower the vehicle.





12. Remove seven oil pump mounting bolts and the oil pump (5) from the cylinder block that has a rubber seal.
13. Remove the rotor plate pins from the oil pump (5).

Installation Procedure

- J 37747 Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer





1. Install the rotor plate pins into the oil pump body (5).
2. Use a J 37747 in order to install the crankshaft oil seal into the oil pump body.





3. Apply engine oil to a J 34853.
4. Fit the J 34853 to the crankshaft.

Important: Ensure that the oil seal lip is not turned out during oil pump installation.

5. Install the oil pump to the cylinder block.
Use the J 34853 in order to install the oil seal over the crankshaft.
6. Remove the J 34853.





7. Apply Loctite(R) pipe sealant GM P/N 12346004 or the equivalent to the thread portion of the oil pump mounting bolts (1) indicated.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

8. Install the oil pump mounting bolts (2) to the oil pump assembly.
Tighten the oil pump mounting bolts to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).





9. Install the rubber seal (2) between the oil pump (1) and the coolant pump (3).





10. Use a sharp knife in order to cut off the edge of the oil pump gasket if the edge of the gasket bulges out.
Verify that the edge is smooth and flush with the end faces of the pump case and the cylinder block.
11. Install the timing belt guide and the crankshaft timing gear.
Ensure that the concave side of the timing belt guide faces the oil pump.
12. Lock the crankshaft with a slotted screwdriver.
13. Secure the timing assembly with a crankshaft timing gear bolt.
Tighten the crankshaft timing gear bolt to 130 Nm (96 ft. lbs.).
14. Install the lower generator mounting bracket.
Tighten the lower generator mounting bracket bolts to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
15. Install the engine oil pan and the oil pump strainer. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement.
16. Install the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement.
17. Lower the vehicle.
18. Refill the engine oil to specifications. Refer to Capacities - Approximate Fluid.
19. Connect the negative battery cable.
20. Start the engine and inspect the engine oil pressure.
