Water Pump: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.





1. Remove the negative battery cable.
2. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
4. Remove the A/C compressor suction pipe bracket (if equipped).
5. Loosen four water pump pulley bolts. Do not remove the bolts.
6. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
7. Remove the right lower splash shield.
8. Remove the A/C compressor drive belt (if so equipped) by releasing the tensioner pulley and removing the belt from the crankshaft and compressor pulleys.
9. Loosen the generator adjusting bolt (1), pivot the generator and remove the water pump/generator drive belt.
10. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
11. Remove the water pump pulley (four bolts).
12. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement.
13. Remove the oil level indicator (dipstick) guide tube.
14. Remove the upper generator adjusting bracket from the water pump (one bolt).





15. Remove the rubber seals from the water pump.
16. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and nuts.
17. Remove the water pump and gasket from the vehicle.
18. Clean the water pump and the gasket mating surfaces.





19. Inspect the water pump by hand for smooth operation. If the pump does not rotate smoothly or produces abnormal noise, replace it.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the new gasket to the engine block.
2. Install the water pump.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Secure the water pump with mounting nuts and bolts.
Tighten the water pump mounting nuts and bolts to 13 Nm (115 inch lbs.).
4. Install new rubber seals (1) to the water pump (2).
5. Install the upper generator adjusting bracket to the water pump (one bolt).
Tighten the upper generator mounting bracket bolt to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the oil level indicator (dipstick) guide tube.
7. Install the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement.
8. Install the water pump pulley.
9. Finger-tighten the four bolts.
10. Install the crankshaft pulley. Refer to Crankshaft Pulley Replacement.
11. Install the water pump/generator drive belt to the crankshaft, water pump and generator pulleys.





12. Install the lower generator cover plate (2).
Tighten the lower generator cover bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
13. Install the A/C compressor drive belt (if so equipped) by releasing the tensioner pulley and installing the belt to the crankshaft and compressor pulleys.
14. Install the right lower splash shield.
15. Lower the vehicle.
Tighten the water pump pulley mounting bolts to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
16. Adjust the water pump/generator drive belt tension to 98 N (22 lbs.), or 6 to 8 mm (0.25 - 0.32 inch) deflection.
Tighten the upper generator adjustment bolt to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)
17. Install the A/C compressor suction pipe bracket (if equipped).
18. Install the air cleaner assembly to the vehicle.
19. Refill the engine cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
20. Connect the negative battery cable.
